About Polls.tools

A poll maker for the quick questions groups have to settle: where to eat, which date works, which design wins, what the class thinks. You write the question, share a short link or QR code, and everyone votes from their phone without creating an account.

Who runs this site

Polls.tools (polls.tools) is operated by Anderson Gomes Ferreira. contato@polls.tools

How it works

A poll is stored on our server (Cloudflare D1) with its question, options and settings. Each vote adds one to the count of that exact ballot; the list of who voted holds only two salted one-way hashes, kept apart from the counts, so nothing stored links a ballot to the person who cast it.

Duplicate votes are stopped in two layers. In the default mode each browser gets a signed, anonymous cookie and can vote once, and a cap per network address stops a script from voting over and over. In the strict mode each network address counts once. There is no CAPTCHA and no third-party service.

Ranked-choice polls are counted by instant runoff: the option with the fewest first choices is eliminated and its ballots move to their next choice until one option has more than half of the ballots still counting. Each round is shown, and ties follow a fixed rule described on the ranked-choice page.

Every poll is deleted, with its votes, 90 days after it is created. The creator can close it or delete it earlier.

Where the data and rules come from

How we keep the content up to date

The counting rules are covered by automated tests that run before every release, including the ranked-choice rounds and the tie rule.

What this site is not

Polls here are informal: no duplicate protection without accounts is perfect, so do not use them for elections, binding decisions or anything with money at stake. People who clear their cookies can vote again unless the strict mode is on, and the strict mode gives a shared Wi-Fi one vote.
